How to set up a campsite
Master the basics. Camp like a pro.
Setting up your campsite the right way can make the difference between a stressful evening and a smooth, cozy night in the outdoors. Whether you’re deep in the backcountry or at a family-friendly campground, follow these simple steps to create your perfect base camp.
1. Choose the Right Spot
Look for a flat, dry area—preferably slightly elevated to avoid water pooling. Stay at least 200 feet (60 meters) away from lakes, rivers, or streams to protect natural habitats and minimize bugs.
Avoid low spots, which can collect rainwater overnight.
2. Check Wind and Sun Exposure
• Face your tent away from the wind.
• Consider where the sun rises to get morning warmth or avoid heat, depending on your needs.
• Look for natural shade during summer trips.
3. Set Up Your Tent First
Lay down a ground tarp or footprint to protect your tent floor. Assemble your tent on flat ground and stake it securely. Use guylines to keep it stable in wind.
🔧 Keep your tent poles, stakes, and rainfly within easy reach when unpacking.
4. Establish Your Camp Zones
Organize your site into 3 clear areas:
🛏️ Sleeping area
Tent, sleeping bags, personal gear
🍳 Cooking area
Camp stove, table, kitchen gear, food
🔥 Fire zone
Fire ring (if allowed), chairs, lanterns).
Keep at least 100 feet (30 m) between your tent and cooking area to avoid attracting wildlife.
5. Set Up a Safe Cooking Station
Use a level surface and keep your stove or fire away from your tent. Have water or sand nearby to extinguish flames. Use a camp kitchen bin to organize food and utensils.
* Store food in bear-safe containers or hang it if you’re in bear country.
6. Hygiene & Waste Management
Bring a toilet kit or portable toilet if needed. Designate a bathroom spot at least 200 feet from water sources. Always pack out your trash—or bury biodegradable waste properly.
7. Keep it Clean and Leave No Trace
Clean as you go. Hang a trash bag, wash dishes away from streams, and always follow Leave No Trace principles.
Clean hands = happy campers. Keep biodegradable soap and a water bottle for quick rinses.
