We are a family deeply rooted in the outdoors.
Our story began in the 1960s and 70s, when our parents – true pioneers – fell in love with camping in the wild landscapes of Colombia.
They explored crystal-clear lakes, remote forests, and the untouched beauty of a country they called home. Later, our adventures expanded to the United States and Canada, where we pitched tents in national parks, cooked over campfires, and learned the skills that shaped the way we live today.
In 2005, we moved to Chile and discovered yet another paradise for outdoor lovers. Since 2016, we’ve made our home in Puerto Varas, at the gateway to Patagonia.
Here, we combined our passion for camping with our love for cycling by founding Austral Bikes, a family-run business specializing in long-distance bike rentals for the legendary Carretera Austral.
From Puerto Varas to Villa O’Higgins, we’ve camped in dozens of magical places and now help travelers discover them too.
KeyCampingGear is our way of sharing decades of experience – over 50 years! – with fellow adventurers.
We are proud of our heritage, blending English, German, and Colombian roots, and even prouder to see the third generation carrying on the love for the outdoors.
Now in our 60s, we continue to camp with the same enthusiasm as ever, alongside our children, who are in their 20s and 30s and have grown up surrounded by tents, stoves, bikes, and backpacks.
